Traveling the Eastern Cape |
The game reserves of the eastern Cape are beautiful and sometimes rugged and support a variety of species including the Big Five. The story of the Addo Elephants is a minor classic of wildlife preservations. They once roamed the Sundays river valley in large herds, but ran foul of farmers and had been almost entirely shout out by 1930. The few remaining were given protection in 1931 in the Zuurberg foothills. Today the 11 000 ha Addo Elephant National Park is approximately 1hr/30 min drive from Port Elizabeth and can be visited as a day excursion or alternatively overnight at one of the privately owned luxurious game lodges like Gorah Elephant Lodge.
