The West Coast is a great destination to visit, and one that is not well known by tourists. This region can be extremely hot in the summer months, and it can also be extremely cold in the winter months (especially at night). To drive by car from Cape Town up the west coast highway, to the town of Clanwilliam is an interesting scenic 2.5 to 3 hour drive through farm lands, past rivers, mountains and lakes.
The west coast is sparsely populated (both humans and vegetation!) and yet is fast developing into SA's biggest wine producing region, not for the quality wines for which the Cape Town Wineland region is better known, but for the area/size of vineyards and massive production of "less expensive" wines. The quaint village of Clanwilliam hosts several "flower festivals" in the flower season from late July to mid/late September. The highly recommend "Bushman's Kloof" Nature Reserve offers a different Cape flaura and fauna experience to that of the eastern Cape/Garden Route and in the flower season especially, the Namaqualand daisies and flowers everywhere offers a spectacular "shower of colour"... Bushman's Kloof offers good walks, great photographic opportunities, daily game drives, fishing (dams and streams/rivers) and is famous for its bushman paintings - a place to relax and unwind in this wild and ruggedly beautiful wilderness in the Cedarberg Mountains...
