Whilst intercity public transport is pretty good, it is once you are in a town or city that one finds the public transport systems to be quite underdeveloped. Most South Africans rely on their own personal transport or minibusses to get around in. However, minibusses are not generally a good option because they are often unroadworthy, the drivers are reckless, and there is the occasional flare-up of a taxi-war - the continual battle for route ownership between rival taxi associations. For the tourist, suitable options are hotel taxis, rental cars or organised day-tours.
