What about personal safety?
It is prudent to be aware of your surroundings in South Africa as the larger centres do potentially expose one to mugging and pickpocketing, as indeed they do anywhere else in the world. Due care should be taken when travelling alone or visiting isolated places, especially after dark. Womenfolk in particular are not advised to travel alone to isolated areas. If you are the stereotype tourist that carries a huge camera and bulging wallet for all and sundry to see, you may be asking for trouble - modesty is the keyword. Your tour guide or hotel concierge should be in a position to provide relevant information about specific locations.
